What to Know Before You Start a Bathroom Remodel:

  1. Set a budget and stick to it.
  2. Give yourself plenty of time for the remodel.
  3. Always begin with the end in mind.
  4. Hire professionals for plumbing and electrical. We will often get three quotes and choose the best one for the job.
  5. Know what is in your walls, last thing you want to do is hit an electrical line or an existing plumbing.
  6. Measure the space, then measure again before you start space planning.
  7. When you open the door, make sure the toilet isn’t the first thing that you see.
  8. Layer your lighting: task lighting for counters and mirrors & ambient lighting to set the mood, also make sure it is damp proof.
  9. Allow for accessibility now or plan for it in the future by putting in extra framing for grab bars.
  10. Use timeless finishes that can stand the test of time.

We wanted a classic charming farmhouse bathroom for this rental. We hand crafted the double sink base, and added a shelf below for storage baskets. The herringbone tile backsplash matches the herringbone tile in the the shower, and an added shelf above the backsplash adds interest to the space. We added a bench that opens to access plumbing and is a great place to store toilet paper. Then we added a shiplap wall coving and a shelf. The project that too the longest was by far the tiling in the shower. We layered subway tiles in a running brick pattern, then a trim piece, then added the herringbone pattern above. Tip: When you do the herringbone pattern, it is best to cut a piece of cardboard the size of the project, then layout all of the pieces on the cardboard with the spacers in-between. Cut tiles and place in order on cardboard. Then I numbered all the tile pieces with a dry erase marker, this helped me to keep them in order as I installed them. All-in-all it was a really fun project and paid off in the end, I am so happy with the results!
